Some of the most creative minds have ADHD. I didn't realize I had it until I was 50 years old. My son was diagnosed with it and I realized, after looking at the 500 questions he had to answer, I had it all my life. Everything fell into place and made sense at that moment. I enjoy my ADHD. I definitely see it as a feature, or a benefit.
I think it is a serious challenge for kids in our schools. Teachers do not understand it, even though they insist they do. But they don't. They brand ADHD kids as lazy. They are not lazy. They are wore out from a very active mind, in most cases a much more active mind that their teacher has. You have to fight for 504 accommodations that your child has a legal right to. And I mean FIGHT. Teachers resent having to take the addition effort to make exceptions for the ADHD student because they prefer to put everyone into the same box. ADHD can ruin lives, but if you learn to accept it and live with it and figure out how to make it work for you, it can be as asset. Many ADHD adults become phenomenally successful. Many successful musicians, artists and writers have ADHD. I see it as another way of seeing the world and processing information. Too bad public education cannot afford to have schools for ADHD kids because the vast majority of them are gifted.
